Nothing bores me quite like the idea of performing cardio and strength training workouts individually, and spending untold hundreds of hours each month performing them - all in the name of getting in better shape or losing weight.

Hours per day? No thanks. Not for me.

No, this isn't a scare tactic, as you won't hurt yourself or mess anything up with your current routine (assuming it's safe), but you won't be getting the most bang for your buck, or for that matter, the most bang for your time.

In nature, do animals spend hours running around for the simple sake of keeping themselves in shape? No way. And for that matter, do they turn around and do some push ups to keep their muscles strong. Nope. And you shouldn't either. When animals move, they are exercising their hearts, lungs and muscle fibers all at once. Even prehistoric man kept himself in prime shape by following nature's guidelines.

It wasn't until recently that the health club craze took off, and changed the way we view fitness. Instead of thinking of the full body, now we break it into these little fitness niches that the industry has told us are mutually exclusive of one another. For instance, they'll tell us we need to spend eons on an elliptical machine. Then hours on the strength machines - that the two can't be done together.


This is blatently false. You can do both. And you don't need to spend hours, either. Just 30 minutes, four times per week is all it takes to get your body in great shape. Any more than that is just wasted energy - which could lead you to burn out and lose sight of your fitness goals all together.
