Qi Gong Exercises - Techniques, Types and Health Benefits



The meaning of "Qi Gong" (Chinese language) is "internal energy exercise". This exercise boosts the body's internal energy level through targeted movements. Qi Gong Exercises also enhance brain-mind functioning along with overall health and vitality. Those who practice it regularly, develop the power of concentration, focus and intelligence.

While performing this exercise, a person follows both internal and external movements for a repeated number of times and they include, body stretching, boosting the body fluid movement and feeling how the body moves through space.

In china, the internal movements are 'neigong' that means internal power. These internal movements are responsible for a superior health and wellness. They are different from almost all other exercises in the West.

Qui Gong practice techniques:

One can follow two types of techniques like, 1. Wai Dan, 2. Nei Dan. The first one is related to physical movement & concentration and the second one is related to sitting meditation & visualization.


Qui Gong for beginners:

At first, beginners learn the physical movements along with breathing techniques. Their practice continues till the movements are perfected. The next step involves moving meditation. Some of the postures are similar to yoga postures and practiced to strengthen the limbs.

The practice technique involves moving, still and sitting meditation that promotes health, improves digestion, and boosts immune system. It also heals headache, aches, pain, sinus congestion and stress.

Types of Qui Gong:

There are three main categories of Qui Gong. Each category involves exercise and techniques, but the only difference is focus. The 3 categories are,
Medical Qigong
Martial Qigong
Spiritual Qigong

Medical Qui Gong is most popular and the oldest among the 4 branches of Chinese medicine. Again, it is divided into two categories like, self-healing and external Qi Gong. Martial Qui Gong involves physical activities; even the practitioners can break bricks, bend steel wires, place sharp object in the body without injury. The third type is spiritual Qui Gong through mantras, mudras, meditation and prayer. This technique is influenced by Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. The technique teaches discipline self-awareness and harmony with the nature.

However, Qui Gong corrects the imbalances present in the human body. These imbalances are, stress, anger, anxiety, depression, grief, etc. Practicing and receiving these exercises activates organ systems and acupuncture points. They also work in the same manner like other exercises that provides relief from emotional stress.
