Should You Train When You Are Sick?

There are times when we fall sick. Since we are hardworking and like to exercise, we are always met with the dilemma of having to make the decision to exercise when we are sick.

So should you actually train when you are sick?

I am sure that the doctors will tell you to not do any form of exercise when you are sick, except for maybe a light brisk walk. You may feel bad that you are not exercising and that you will either gain back your lost weight, or lose your hard gained muscles. So how should you go about making this decision? Is your doctor correct?

Assuming you were to search well enough on the Internet, some forums will tell you the decision to exercise lies with the exact illness you are suffering from. This is true, and there are some kinds of illness even when diagnosed with them, you will still be able to exercise without getting negative side effects. The following are several of the most common illnesses that you may suffer from time to time.

If you have a fever, you should not train at all. This is true, and stressing your body further while having a fever will only increase your body temperature. If you have a fever, do not exercise.

If you have cough, it depends on the seriousness. If you only suffer from slight coughing from time to time, you can still exercise, but keep cardiovascular exercises to a minimum. Weight lifting is acceptable and will have minimal side effects. However, assuming you suffer from severe cough spasms, do not exercise and visit the doctor.

Now, the most common illness which people get due to either the environment or over training is the common cold. It is also the most asked about question. There are forums advocating people to decide to exercise depending on whether the symptoms are above or below the neck area. However, I suggest a different approach. If you feel like you are about to get a cold soon, but are not yet diagnosed with one, do not train. If you have a cold already and are sneezing crazily or have mucus flowing, do not train. Only if you are already halfway through your recovery period and you do not feel lethargic anymore, then you should exercise.

There is one main point in exercising when sick. Always remember to train below your maximum threshold when you are sick. You want to maintain your fitness levels, but do not over train.

Now, when someone else asks you whether you should train when you are sick, you will be able to confidently present them with the answer!
