4 Benefits of Jumping Rope

The jump rope has evolved significantly from the playground days. It's no longer just a kid's toy, but a genuine piece of exercise equipment - and rightly so. The jump rope is the simplest way to bring some awesome benefits to your body.

Convenience
There is no other piece of exercise equipment out there that is as compact as a jump rope. You can stick it in your briefcase, gym bag, purse or even pocket. Extremely easy to take with you anywhere - on vacation, business trips, or just about anywhere else you can think of. It can be used anywhere and at any time. No need for anything but you, your rope and some shoes (and even those are kind of optional). And, because it is so widely used, you can pick one up at just about any store for less than $10.

Lower Body
It seems almost too obvious to point out, but this is an incredible workout for your legs and Gluteus Maximus. Jumping rope utilizes just about every single muscle in your leg. It may seem too good to be true, but it hits them all. Today there are tons of ways to increase this workout with different step variations and even whole routines to maximize every second you are jumping. The upper body gets a bit of a work out too. Weights can be added to give more of a push to the upper body, but the real part that sees the results is the lower body.

Cardio and Calories
This is a tough cardio workout. If you have never jumped rope before and think it is easy, think again. Beyond the toned legs, your cardiovascular system is profiting greatly from this workout. Your heart and circulatory system are working like you do when you sprint. And well all should know by now that an increased circulation and heart exercise is always a good thing. While this cardio action is taking place, the calories are burning away. You can burn more calories jumping rope than you do running (1).

Lymphatic System
Your lymphatic system is like your bodies waste management. In order for the lymphatic system to get cleaned out, your muscles have to contract again and again. The more you do this, the more "waste" your body removes. Jumping rope is a constant muscle contraction and so you get a cleaner more efficient lymphatic system and muscles to boot.

A bonus benefit of jumping rope is coordination and timing. A lot of people don't realize the benefits having to time your jumps in sync with your hands turning the rope. Your brain kicks in and is forced to help get a rhythm going. You may trip a few times at the start, but in a short time you will develop a rhythm of your own. You will benefit from this new coordination with quicker responses in other areas of life and realize jumping rope is an excellent workout that isn't just for kids anymore.
