Tips for Dealing With Spring Allergies

Tis the Season

It is the start of the season for beautiful spring blossoms, warmer sunny weather, and heavy coated yellow cars. Spring allergies shouldn't have to be so difficult to deal with when a good plan is in order. After a long hard winter, it is understandable that one just does not have the patience to stay indoors and remain hiding. While medications are useful, better planning can also change the way you look at the spring season, as well as learn to appreciate it.

Medications

Drugs are the usual choice for relief of seasonal allergies, however it is best to not use medications for very long as tolerance levels will increase and higher doses will need to be taken. The best time to start taking allergy medication is mid to late February, which gives the body enough time to adjust. Throat lozenges, decongestants and saline nasal rinses are the usual forms of medications to try. Starting medication early will inhibit some of the production of allergies. Some symptoms of taking medications can include nervousness, high blood pressure and heart palpitations. Schedule a doctor visit to see what the exact allergies are and what the sensitivity is to them before taking any medications. For example, high blood pressure, glaucoma or having heart problems can worsen when taking decongestants. If medications do not work well respirator masks are another good way to keep pollen out of the airways. Longer lasting masks come with HEPA filters for higher efficiency.

Staying Clear

Try to keep an eye on pollen counts in the news and plan the week according to the levels of airborne pollen. The windier the day is, the more aggravating the pollen. Pollen levels are at their highest from 10am until 4pm and their lowest after rain or snowfall, as pollen tempers when wet. It is also helpful to keep the inside of the home as clear as possible from outside dust and pollen. Wiping shoes off or leaving them outside, immediately washing clothes and bed sheets and wiping down furniture will keep most of the pollen outside. Many people will shut their windows and stay indoors, yet there are better ways to handle seasonal allergies and enjoy regular outdoor activities. Be sure to check the pollen count, time of day, and take medication before leaving the house. Still, shutting windows and running a HEPA air filter system can be helpful to purify the air, as well as changing other indoor air filters. Pets should also stay off the furniture and be given a bath once daily, or as needed.
