Though not widely publicized, the legs, feet, and ankles have a unique set of ailments associated with them. In fact, many people ignore their body's warning signs. Recently, however, more patients are complaining about heel discomfort.

There are two main categories of pain in the heel. When the discomfort is localized to the pads, it is most likely plantar fasciitis. This condition occurs when the connective tissue that runs from the back to the front of the feet is inflamed.

The other category revolves around the Achilles tendon. When Achilles tendinitis is identified, it can feel miserable, but neither category usually result in a serious condition. If the discomfort begins to interfere with normal day to day living, however, a professional should be consulted.

There are other causes of heel pain that are not as frequently seen. Conditions such as fibromyalgia, bursitis, and pinched nerves are uncomfortable as well. While these are less often listed as complaints, if certain symptoms occur it is important to schedule an appointment.

There are times when a professional should be immediately contacted, they include: localized foot pain with fever, numbness or tingling in the heel, severe pain and swelling, or pain that immediately follows some form of injury. In these cases, go immediately to evaluated.

Pain is never something that should be ignored. Rather than ignore the symptoms, call a Chattanooga podiatrist to help ease any discomfort. Feet should always be treated with respect.
