The competitive edition of this game may be practiced in both environments, that is, outdoor and indoor. The gymnasts perform moves whereas judges, usually sitting at an altitude observe and award marks. A system called execution score is the basis of awarding marks. Execution score confines the overall marks one can attain to ten. Judges deduct points from the overall ten points basing on how effectual the gymnast performs. The points left after the gymnast finishes is the final score.

Currently however, there is a new system of awarding points called the difficulty score. This score has no limit to the number of points a person can score. It is based on the level of difficulty of the events one performs and how efficient they are performed. The score also bases on whether one completes all the events or fails to do so.

Difficulty score system is currently in use in the US. It is considered a revolution in the game altogether. This system has prompted gymnasts to put more efforts in learning how to execute skills well and how to link skills to each other during performances. Infact well linked elements during a performance can earn the participant many marks because it is a major field considered when awarding marks.
